Having studied the psychology of wellbeing and subsequently trained specifically in the area of how to measure and evolve wellbeing in organisations, my lived experience is that a huge amount of companies don’t quite know where to start and so their efforts are often limited to food, fitness and mindfulness interventions. All very valid and no doubt well-intentioned, but limited in terms of meaningful long term impact for both the employee and the organisation. Strategy is important in all facets of business and wellbeing in the workplace is no different. Here is a simple 5 step strategy that any business can implement to support the wellbeing of its people and in the process improve business outcomes:
1. DEFINE WELLBEING
From a psychological and physiological perspective, the PERMAH model of wellbeing in the workplace is not only simple in its approach, but is also very well researched and evidence based. This model defines wellbeing under 6 core pillars:
Positive Emotions – experiencing genuine positive emotions (and being resourced to navigate negative emotions) in the workplace.
Engagement – using our strengths that energise us, to feel more confident, energised, engaged and productive at work.
Relationships – fostering healthy, connected and productive relationships in the workplace.
Meaning – feeling a sense of meaning that what we do each day has a positive impact on others and contributes to something larger than ourselves.
Accomplishments – feeling we have the ability to achieve what matters at work.
Health – moving, sleeping and eating well.
2. MEASURE WELLBEING & ASK QUESTIONS
Measure the state of wellbeing of individuals and teams in your workplace under each of the PERMAH pillars. Also, ask your people what areas of their wellbeing are they currently finding most challenging to care for and find out what type of support and resources would they value. This will enable you to be smart and impactful with your wellbeing strategy and interventions.
3. INTERPRET THE DATA
The data you collect here can be extremely insightful into the health of different teams in your organisation and can give you an opportunity to leverage and replicate what is being done well and address what isn’t working. You can also hear from your people on what areas they are struggling with and what type of supports and resources they would value.
4. IMPLEMENT
Implement a strategy to address areas of your workplace wellbeing that are most relevant to your people.
5. REASSESS
Reassess wellbeing in your workplace after implementing your strategy over a period of 6 to 12 months. Determine what’s improved, what’s worked well and what hasn’t so that you can modify again moving forward.
